Bathroom Glow Up

Most of this 1910s home was renovated sometime in the 1990s and hasn’t been touched since. When the new homeowners moved in, the bathroom was the first space they wanted to tackle.

The layout stayed mostly the same, with the exception of the door location. Plumbing was adjusted so that the bathtub faucet and shower faucet were located on the same wall. The storage cabinet between the tub and toilet was removed to make more space for the new toilet, and the pedestal sink was replaced with a recessed custom vanity.

The room was totally gutted in order to properly insulate the outside walls and ceiling, as well as to update the electrical. This proved to be very messy, as the original sawdust insulation was still in the attic, and the lath and plaster walls created a lot of debris. When the flooring was removed to place new subfloor, we found the joists had been improperly cut to install sewer lines. These joists were replaced and properly supported.

While the homeowners wanted to update the bathroom, they wanted to maintain a classic feel to the space to keep with the age of the home. Tall white wainscoting with a deep blue wall colour was selected to brighten the space and add character. A walnut luxury vinyl plank was used on the floor, with a large format marble tile on the walls. The vanity was custom built to recess into the wall, increasing the amount of storage space available. A large medicine cabinet was also recessed into the wall, with modern chrome wall sconces placed on either side. white vanity and medicine cabinet

The shower features a chrome rainfall shower head and telescopic hand held shower head, as well as a recessed niche with granite shelves. Floating walnut shelves were installed above the toilet for decor, and the original vent stack was sprayed copper for a warm accent.

The homeowners love their new fresh space, and can’t wait to tackle their next project in this home.

Black and White Kitchen Upgrade

Kitchen Upgrade

We were approached by our customer to upgrade his kitchen in his home with the idea that he might sell in the near future. The original floor plan stayed the same, but we replaced the flooring throughout the main floor with tile and hardwood, updated the fireplace in the living room, and built a new kitchen. The updated colour palette gives this kitchen upgrade a modern look that would be appealing to anyone.

The Before

As you can see, there was a decent amount of oak going on. Since red oak isn’t a trendy colour these days, we removed as much of it as we could, which included baseboards and trim throughout the main floor. The kitchen cabinets were a neutral white, but not very functional. We decided to take the cabinets close to the ceiling, move the microwave into the island, and create a more functional pantry beside the fridge.

Our customer met with a designer at Alford’s to select finishes and flooring for the house. They decided on a solid hardwood for the kitchen, dining, and living areas, and a porcelain tile for the entrance, laundry and half bath.

The After

What a difference, right? The oak is replaced with clean white trim, and a rich granite counter top ties in the black pendants with the white cabinets and back splash.

We also installed new hardwood and tile flooring, plus we removed the hearth and mantle from the fireplace and installed new stacked stone from floor to ceiling.

New Fireplace

We used a piece of hardwood to transition from the tile to hardwood, rather than a strip of metal for the den and kitchen area. This requires precision work, and we nailed it!
